Near Misses

First, I am shocked and dismayed that I didn’t learn until just now that yesterday was National Pigeon Day. Having lived with a pigeon for thirteen years (more about that later) and being a great fan of pigeons in general, I feel that I owe an apology to our noble yet much maligned feathered friends.

Second, I am bummed that I forgot to bring my camera to the Fairfax Festival this morning. The festival always begins with a parade, and while this year’s parade started out looking like nothing more than some confused people walking down the middle of the street, it got much better as it went along. If I had remembered my camera, I would be able to post a video of the hands-down hit of the day: the Marin Sanitary Service Drill Team, complete with yard waste bins on wheels, performing their crowd-pleasing routine to Michael Jackson’s “Workin’ Day and Night.” Here is the next best thing, which is a video I found on YouTube of last year’s performance. It’s definitely worth watching, but you’ve got to trust me that this year’s show was even better. It should have been, considering that it was the exact same routine and they had 365 additional days to perfect it. Also, they had some fine new neon-orange costumes.

There’s something about a gas station that makes me stupid. I know I’m not the only one, because every new car boasts some kind of technology — even if it’s just a plastic string — to keep us from driving away with our gas cap loose on the roof. There are also fixes for more…

Be a person here. Stand by the river, invoke the owls. Invoke winter, then spring. Let any season that wants to come here make its own call. After that sound goes away, wait.   A slow bubble rises through the earth and begins to include sky, stars, all space, even the outracing, expanding thought….

I drove from Berkeley to Big Sur this week, determined not to go faster than 60 mph. I had just paid for my first $4 gallon of gas and it freaked me out. I just can’t imagine spending $60 every week or so to fill my 15 gallon tank. And I know that one great…

I didn’t know anything about the mind of John O’Donohue until last year. The poet, philosopher, and former Catholic priest gave an interview in The Sun magazine (April 2007) in which he noted that when we enter an intimate relationship with another person, we are hell bent on colonizing all the space between us. (I…

It’s not unusual for me to show up at work and find bird things on my desk — photographs, books, newspaper clippings, feathers, nests. My office is avian chaos, but I don’t mind. It’s touching when the people you care about know what you love and bring offerings from their wanderings in the world. Yesterday…
