Here Today: 5.19.2010

I was supposed to fly home from New Mexico this morning, but I fell in love with Ghost Ranch and arranged to stay on. I had no idea the place was about to fill up with musicians for its first-ever Bluegrass Camp & Extravaganza. Tonight, the valley swelled with the sounds of plucked strings and singing in harmony. Lucky I like bluegrass! It’s quite friendly, indeed.

Push-pins . . .

Spent half an hour doing laundry, an hour taking pictures of it.

I often dream of ladders, stairs, elevators.

It’s impossible to resist sprinklers in the alfalfa field at sunset.

Two more days!

    Blueberry Raspberry Jam

Now that I’ve (mostly) given up sugar, I make fewer preserves with it. By my count, I’ve made a sugared preserve just three times in the past year: fifty tiny jars of quince apple butter for favors at our wedding party last September, a small batch of Satsuma plum jam when a gift of ripe fruit unexpectedly…

    Drink This Beer

Today is International Beer Day, so I thought I’d tell you a little story about a great beer and a nice guy. The beer is Dacker. It’s a full-bodied, goes-down-easy ale, first brewed in the Adirondacks in 1885. We happened upon it in 2007, when it was recommended to us by a server at the…

  • You’ll Have to Ask Spike

I’ll be away for three weeks and I’ve decided to leave the porcupine in charge. He’s an industrious dude, perfectly capable of watching over the few posts that will appear here while I’m gone. Besides, if I don’t give him something to do, he’ll chew through everything in sight. Seriously, this guy and his ilk…

    Hearth-Made Yogurt

One of my kitchen goals for this year was to learn to make yogurt. From what I understood, it was going to be one of the easiest tasks to scratch off my to-do list. When I investigated yogurt-making methods, however, I became so confused by the number of ways to proceed that it stopped me in…

  • On Vashon

Friday I was on a flight from Oakland to Seattle, tucked into a middle seat between strangers. On my left was a young woman moving to the Pacific Northwest to stay; this was the flight to her new home. On my right sat a woman about my age who moved to Seattle a couple decades ago….

  • Quit Your Whining

Sometimes all it takes to wake you up is a quick shift in perspective. That happened to me today, when my friend Janet reappeared after almost four weeks hiking solo in the Eastern Sierra. Having trekked more than 270 miles, she got off the train skinny, strong, and brown from a rough mix of dirt…
